The river and greenway pass through three counties and 16 cities, providing a natural, ecological connective thread from Utah Lake to Great Salt Lake, and offering important recreation, education and community-building opportunities through the center of Utah’s most populated region.
This is a social celebratory gathering for Jordan River Friends, both new and old. The event will include educational and artistic displays, a delicious dinner from a long-time favorite local restaurant and caterer, with an inspiring informational program and an optional pre-event tour inside the construction zone of Tracy Aviray’s expanding Jordan River Nature Center (Phase 2 to be completed this fall).
The Jordan River has been a vital asset to people through thousands of years of human history, serving as a source of life and sustenance, and a center of activity and human connections. For the diverse people of Utah today, it is an urban oasis for walking, running, biking, paddling, fishing, bird and wildlife watching, education and community gathering.
The Parkway provides tremendous volunteer stewardship opportunities, connecting people with nature and building support for its improvement. The river and surrounding natural lands provide critical habitat for hundreds of wildlife species, and a vital resting and nesting area for millions of migratory birds. As our community grows, the natural services and functions of the Jordan River are more important than ever.
The Jordan River and its connected watershed and ecosystems have sometimes been overlooked in the past, and even neglected and polluted. Today, many recognize the important role we each can play in caring for this natural and cultural resource, and many individuals and organizations are hard at work revitalizing the Jordan River, and its parkway and watershed, guided by a promising vision for its future.
We look forward to having you join us to recognize a few special individuals and organizations who are among our Outstanding Jordan River Friends, as we gather to conclude our month-long Get to the River Festival.
