The Jordan River Commission has about 200 Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) and 100 peachleaf willow (Salix amygdaloides) trees that will be ready to plant between late October 2023 and early February 2024. We are looking for landowners and managers (public and private) who are interested in having trees planted on their property along the Jordan River. Please fill out this application if you are interested in this program. Approval will be based on outcomes of a preliminary site evaluation with Jordan River Commission staff and the applicant’s ability to provide supplemental water. The Jordan River Commission will provide the trees, cages, and will coordinate volunteers to plant.
Many of these plants have been growing in tall pots (36″ deep pots that encourage the growth of a deep taproot). When planted close enough to the water table, the trees’ deep roots will help them establish more quickly, with less supplemental water. The Jordan River Commission piloted this project in 2018–2019, with many lessons learned. We are excited to work with partners to revegetate the Jordan River Corridor!
